Paradise Community Village Now Accepting Applications
Community Housing Improvement Program (CHIP) announces households can now apply to live at its newly reconstructed rental community, Paradise Community Village. CHIP and the Town of Paradise have given Camp Fire survivor applications preference to the available units. Previous tenants of Paradise Community Village at the time of the fire receive first preference. Then, Camp Fire survivors living in temporary shelters (such as RVs, tents, FEMA-direct housing, or other shelters not meant for long-term shelter) receive second preference. Other Camp Fire survivors who lost their place of residence in the 2018 Camp Fire receive third preference. Verification will be required. Households that are not Camp Fire survivors are encouraged to apply as well. The remaining units will go to all other qualifying households. Applications must be submitted no later than June 17. Units are filled in order of when the application is submitted and by the preferences listed above. Income limits apply, and applicants must qualify under the criteria of the applicable funding programs.
Wendy Phillips, Director of Property Management for CHIP, says “We are thrilled to be reopening this property after the devastation of losing it in the Camp Fire. It is a beautiful community that will once again welcome 35 families home in Paradise.” CHIP decided to keep much of the look and feel of the original property the same. Some previous residents have expressed that they do want to return. “It will be an emotional reunion, especially for those who lost everything that will finally step foot again in the place they once called home,” says Phillips.
CHIP began reconstruction in August of 2020 and expects construction to be completed this coming August. CHIP President and CEO, Seana O’Shaughnessy, notes the significance of reopening, “For our team, the reconstruction of Paradise Community Village is a symbol of hope and renewal. We have worked hard to bring it back and can’t wait to see it filled with families.” CHIP plans to mark the milestone by hosting its annual fundraiser and the rededication of the property on September 18.
