A Dream Becoming a Reality

Aleida and her children moved into their new home on December 13, 2019, just in time to celebrate Christmas there. Their house is part of the Stonefox Ranch affordable housing development in Corning, CA. When I asked Aleida how she felt when she got the keys to her house, she said, “I felt very emotional because it was one of my dreams to own my own house and I never thought that I would be able to accomplish that dream so soon.” As I was speaking with Aleida, it was easy to see the pride she had being a homeowner. “I have always rented and it’s very uncomfortable to live in a place that’s not really yours. When I applied (for the Self-Help Homeownership Program), I had cancer and I thought I was going to die, but I pushed myself and I was able to overcome it.”
Between the time Aleida applied and started construction on her home, she had beaten cancer. “It was a beautiful experience,” she shares about the construction process. “I had never even used a hammer or anything like that. I am a single mother and people would say that because I am by myself I wouldn’t be able to do anything. But I am the owner of my own home now.” “Homeowner ” is a good look for Aleida, she is still in disbelief that she can wear that title now, especially when she reflects on how hard this past year was for her. “I have suffered a lot but then I say, ‘Wow, I have overcome this.’ It was a dream and now it’s a reality.”
Aleida is proud of everything she fought against to be where she is today. “I was doing a lot between being a mother, working and building the home. There were weeks when I didn’t get to spend a whole day with my kids, not one whole day. They wanted me to take them to the park or something, but I couldn’t. It was hard.” Despite all of the long days, Aleida says it was worth it, and she recommends others that are on the fence about it. “I want to share my story so that people can see me and get encouraged that they can do it, too, so that they would be encouraged to apply for this great program.”
Aleida’s story is a helpful reminder that sometimes a little help is all that is needed to overcome the challenges we face.
Un Sueño Hecho Realidad
Aleida y sus hijos se cambiaron a su nueva casa el 13 de diciembre del 2019, justo a tiempo para celebrar navidad allí. Su casa es parte de Stonfox Ranch, una subdivisión en Corning. Cuando le pregunte a Aleida como se sintió cuando le dieron las llaves de su casa dijo “Me sentí muy emocionada porque era uno de mis sueños ser dueña de mi propia casa y nunca pensé que lo lograría tan pronto.” Cuando estaba hablando con Aleida fue fácil de ver el orgullo que tenia en ser dueña de casa. “Siempre andaba rentando y se siente muy incomodo, cuando solicite yo (para el programa de Self-Help Homeownership) estaba batallando con cáncer y pensé que me iba a morir, pero me di ánimo y lo sobre pase.”
Entre el tiempo que Aleida solicito para el programa y cuando empezó a construir ya estaba curada del cáncer. “Fue una experiencia muy bonita,” comenta sobre la experiencia de construir su casa, “yo nunca había hecho algo así, nunca había martillado ni nada de eso, aprendí mucho. Yo soy madre soltera y la gente me decía que porque estoy sola no iba a poder lograr nada, pero si pude, ya soy dueña de mi propia casa.” Ser dueña de casa le queda bien a Aleida, pero todavía no lo puede creer especialmente cuando piensa lo difícil que fue el año pasado. “He sufrido mucho pero luego digo ‘Wow, ya logré esto.’ Era un sueño y ya es una realidad.”
Aleida está orgullosa de todo lo que ha superado para estar donde esta hoy. “Estaba haciendo mucho, trabajando y construyendo la casa. Había semanas que no tenia un día con mis hijos, querían que los llevara al parque o algo, pero no podía. Fue difícil.” A pesar de todo Aleida dice que valió la pena y recomienda a otros que lo están considerando que lo hagan. “Quero compartir mi historia para que la gente me vea y que sepan que ellos también lo pueden hacer, que se animen a solicitar para este gran programa.”
La historia de Aleida es un buen recordatorio que a veces un poco de ayuda es todo lo que necesitamos para superar los obstáculos que enfrentamos.
