HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS: CHIP HELPS NINE FAMILIES BECOME HOMEOWNERS IN ORLAND

ORLAND—Several families will celebrate the holidays this year in new homes they helped build through Community Housing Improvement Program.

Nine families get keys to their new homes on Wednesday, December 13 at 10:30 a.m. at the Villa La Michele 3 subdivision on Jacqueline and Gable Streets. This is the second phase of VLM3—eight families moved in last month, and the subdivision has now sold all 38 lots with 21 still under construction.  Representatives from USDA and CHIP will meet with the families to sign final paperwork so the new homeowners can move in immediately.

Under CHIP’s self-help program, families build their homes in groups of five to nine families under the supervision of CHIP’s construction staff.  Each household dedicates at least 30 hours per week in labor towards building their new homes and help each other during the process, which takes about a year. All homes must be finished before anyone moves in.

House plans included 3-5 bedrooms priced around $200,000, with no down payment, affordable monthly payments and low fixed interest rates. USDA Rural Development provides funding assistance for these programs. Builders must make at or below 80 percent median income for the county in which they build, have decent credit, and earn enough income to make monthly payments on the loan.

CHIP also has other developments starting soon and maintains an interest list. For more information about self-help housing, visit chiphousing.org
